Rider's Responsibilities

  • As a participant in a BRBC ride you MUST sign the waiver annually (found on the BRBC website and below). As a club member you will be prompted to sign the waiver when you renew your membership. As a guest your signature is good for one year.  Note:  For BRBC Mountain Bike Rides, all riders must sign a waiver each ride.  Do not assume the ride leader will have waivers with them. If you have not signed the waiver, you will not be able to join the ride.

Waiver and Release of Liability

  • YOU MUST WEAR A HELMET! Headlights and taillights are strongly suggested.
  • BRBC RIDES LEAVE ON TIME!  Make sure your bicycle is in safe working order and ready to ride when you arrive. We recommend that you show up at least 20 minutes before the posted start time.
  • Choose a ride within your ride ability as determined by our Ride Level Classification Grid. Please refer to Our Rides and Choosing a BRBC Ride to determine your ride levels and the ride descriptions. Do not participate in a ride that exceeds your skill level, even if it is indicated as "no-drop."
  • Obey all traffic laws. This includes stopping at stop signs and red lights.  As a courtesy to drivers, we recommend that the group pull over at a safe spot if it is holding up a line of cars. The Blue Ridge Parkway has specific rules requiring front and rear lights when riding in tunnels and riding single file at all times - Bicycling the Parkway
  • Follow group cycling best practices.  Communicate with hand signals and verbally when turning, stopping, or pointing out road hazards.  Be predictable to your fellow cyclists and other road users. Please refer to Ride Safety for more details.
  • Don’t confront motorists - get the tag number and vehicle description, then report the incident to the police.
  • You must have either an electronic or printed copy of the route, your ride leader’s contact info and a fully charged cell phone with which to call them if there is a problem. However, if you get separated from the group, you must be able to find your way, as some rides go through areas with little or no cell service. Re-grouping is up to the Ride Leader and it is not the ride leader’s responsibility to find you if you are lost. Refer to RideWithGPS Instructions to access club routes.
  • When stopping on the road to regroup, waiting for others, making an adjustment, or for any reason, you must get completely off the road. It is a North Carolina state law.
  • Bring adequate water and snacks for the length of the ride. Bring an ID, credit card and/or cash. The ride leader should indicate where the rest stops may be but be prepared for an unanticipated closure.
  • Make sure you have tools with you for basic maintenance; especially those required to fix a flat. You should know how to fix your own flat. If you do not, contact your local bike shop, friend, or even the ride leader so that you can practice before the ride.
  • Always pack a large dose of good humor. You’ll have good rides, bad rides, cold rides, hot ride, wet rides, all kinds of rides but if you bring your sense of humor, you will enjoy spending time in the saddle with other bike-loving comrades regardless of the conditions!
