NC Senior Games Bicycle Time-Trials, 2017
The WNC contingent to the NC Senior Games cycling time-trials was smaller than usual on September 24, but still came away with a significant number of medals and course records.
The venue for the three events, one-mile, 5k and 10k was held at the State Trooper Training Center in Raleigh. It has a wonderful one and a half mile circuit that includes hills and curves, and is more like a road than a track. The weather was near perfect at first - mild temperatures and calm winds, and although it got hot and quite windy later, it did not deter any of us. There were about 70 competitors, most of them in 2 or 3 of the races.
There were seven Ashe-Villains, (l-r in picture) John Mikkonen, Marshall Gordon, Glenn Rodgers, Jim Martin, Trevor Wallis, and Eric Johnston (missing Geoff Brace), and they came home with 12 golds, four silvers and a bronze. 17 out of a possible 21 medals is a great success story.
Blue Ridge Parkway Pavement Maintenance
Blue Ridge Parkway managers are introducing a maintenance strategy designed to extend the life of pavement on this historic route. Several sections of Parkway between Milepost 27 and 175 have been identified for work as part of a Pavement Preservation Program (PPP). Work on these projects is expected to begin July 5, 2017, with the project taking approximately twelve weeks to complete.
The pavement preservation technique that will be used on the Parkway is known as chipseal, which involves the application of liquid asphalt and stone chips to the road surface. On the Parkway, chipsealwill be applied along with a fog seal application to minimize loose gravel and accumulation. This technique can require up to two days to cure properly.
Anticipate loose gravel on the road surface during the cure time for the pavement. Bicyclists and motorcyclists, in particular, are asked to exercise extreme caution as loose gravel on top of the paved surface, during the required curing time, could result in loss of control. For more info
